The medulla, also called the brain stem, regulates involuntary actions such as heart rate, breathing, and swallowing. The cerebrum is responsible for thoughts, hearing, and seeing. The cerebellum is responsible for muscle coordination and balance, and the pons coordinates messages between different portions of the brain.
